Regional Councillor steps in for the Mayor when they are unable to complete their duties (vacation, illness, conflicts). This requires a full time committment to maintaining knowledge of ongoing projects and processes.
The Role of a Regional Councillor
Regional Responsibilities
Regional councillors help shape policy, set budgets, and oversee key regional services like police, public health, land ambulance, emergency management, recycling and waste disposal, social housing, and water and wastewater treatment. Regional Councillor must know local needs and bring the information to the York Council.
Local Responsibilities
Representing the community at the town level on local issues such as fire services, local roads, parks, and libraries.
Committee Work
Much of this work happens through standing and advisory committees (such as transit, finance, or planning), where councillors review issues in depth before they go to full council.
